        6th March 2002

White has a good 'open file' towards the black king.
How best can he use it?
        a) Qd2 - h6 Going for mate on g7. Black cannot take the queen, as the
pawn is pinned. But g6 is a good response. White best attempt would then
be Rg1-g3-h3 going for mate on h7. 3 points.
        b) Qd2 - g5 Also going for mate on g7. But g6 is a still good response.
        3 points.
        c) Qd2 - f4 No direct treat, but getting the queen into the attack. 2
        points
        d) Qd2 x d5 Losing the queen for nothing. 1 point
        e) Rg1 x g7+ Giving up the rook to break through black's defenses. Kh8
        allows Qh6 and then Qxh7 mate. Kxg7 allows Qg5+ Kh8 (forced), Qf6+ Kg8
        Rg1 mate. 4 points
        f) Rg1 - g3 Planning to double rooks on the (semi-)open file. But it gives
black time to move a rook to c8 and threaten a counter attack. After Rdg1,
to 'double' on the file, black can still juts play g6 to counter white's
        threats. 2 points
