Third East Surrey Schools’ Chess Jamboree

25th January 2003, de Stafford College, Caterham.

A record 88 players from 26 different schools took part in the 3rd East Surrey Chess Jamboree. After a total of over 200 tense games of chess just three players emerged with a perfect 5 wins from their 5 games. James Foster from Cumnor House School won the secondary school (under 18) section. This was a great achievement since he is just 12 years old. In the primary school section Whyteleafe School classmates George West and Joshua Cooper shared first place.

For the third year running Notre Dame School in Lingfield won the secondary school team competition, with a score of 13.5 out of 20, with de Stafford College second and Trinity 3rd. In the primary section Whyteleafe School also completed a hat-trick, withe 17.5 out of 20, followed by St John's School Caterham in second place. Essendene Lodge were 3rd and Woodlea School 4th.

Winners of the year group trophies were: Danny Eichner, James Rudland, Jemima McGraw, Mark Attree (All Notre Dame), Jonathan Serter (Trinity), James Foster (Cumnor House) and Jonathan Lui (Whitgift); George West, Joshua Cooper, Felicia Lui, Daniel Hubbard and Michael Ede (Whyteleafe), James Sullivan (St John's) and Joshua Wildman (Essendene Lodge).

[Note: Tie breaks were decided by Sum of Progressive scores. If these were equal then the players were declared equal.]
