Second East Surrey Schools’ Chess Jamboree

26th January 2002, de Stafford College, Caterham.

15 teams of 4 players, from a total of 7 schools, contested the event. Players range from County players to new chess players, from sixth formers to those still in infant school. But age was now determinant, as various of the secondary school pupils found out when playing even the youngest of the contestants.

At first it was not clear who would win, as last year's secondary school champions, Notre Dame A (Lingfield), were held to a 2-2 draw in the second round by Caterham School A team. The early leaders were Whyteleafe, last year's primary school champions, who scored 11 wins out of a maximum of 12 from their first 3 matches. However, in round 4 Whyteleafe were routed 4-0 by Notre Dame A, who followed up with a 3-1 win over de Stafford A in round 5 to be tournament winners with a round to spare.

As Whyteleafe were clearly going to win the primary section, interest in the last round focused on who would win the Under 14 cup. The two contesting teams, de Stafford A and Notre Dame C, were playing each other and whoever won would take the cup. After some fascinating games the de Stafford team emerged triumphant 3.5 to 0.5

The only players to win all six of their games were County chess player Alex Kelly from Caterham School and Ben Parsons from Notre Dame. But 7 year old Felicia Lui from Whyteleafe scooped the board 3 prize for scoring 4 wins and a draw, whilst 6 year old Ruth Cooper, also from Whyteleafe, had 4 wins and 2 loses.
